Derek Tarver concentrates his practice on product liability litigation, with a focus on developing technology in the automotive and consumer product industries. Derek enjoys understanding the engineering and design aspects of his clients’ products, as well as the economic and human factors that tie into their development.

Derek earned his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of South Carolina School of law.  He was named to the Order of the Coif, selected for the Order of the Wig and Robe, and earned the CALI awards for Torts, Products Liability, Technology Law, Appellate Advocacy, Comparative Law, Conflicts of Law, Legal Writing for the Courts and Fourth Circuit Practice.  

While in law school, Derek served as the torts tutor for Professor Bryant Walker Smith.  In addition, Derek was the Associate Editor in Chief of the South Carolina Law Review, volume 68, which featured his Student Note discussing resource preservation through expansion of the public trust doctrine.  Derek was also a board member for the S.C. School of Law’s Pro Bono office.

Outside of Bowman and Brooke, Derek is the Associate Reporter for the Uniform Law Commission’s Uniform Highly Automated Vehicles Act (HAVA), which is developing uniform legislation for Automated Vehicles for adoption amongst the several states.
