Jennifer Coates is a trial lawyer practicing product liability, toxic tort and commercial litigation, representing corporate clients across a wide range of industries nationwide, particularly focused on automotive litigation. She works regularly defending one of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers. She has extensive trial and appellate experience, including as first and second chair, defending clients from initial filing through appeal.
Jennifer has a wide array of litigation and trial experience representing corporations and government entities in complex civil litigation matters involving business torts, administrative law, constitutional matters, real estate disputes, employment law, intellectual property, construction law, educational law, antitrust, mass tort, toxic tort and government investigations and compliance.
In her cases, Jennifer executes the overall defense strategy and case management; serving as trial counsel and handling oral arguments; identifying and preparing experts; taking and defending depositions; as well as drafting dispositive, non-dispositive motions and discovery responses. Jennifer has extensive experience with engineering, economic, medical and human factors experts, cutting quickly and effortlessly to the technical defense in her cases.
Prior to joining the firm, Jennifer served as an Assistant Attorney General with the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General. In that role, she represented state and county agencies in civil and administrative matters, as well as oversaw all aspects of government investigations, including developing investigation plans, supervising evidence collection and providing strategic direction to investigators, internal auditors and compliance officers. Jennifer also represented state regulatory agencies in state and federal courts and regularly advised her clients on data privacy, risk management and compliance and regulatory matters.
